Description
This is a large headstone made of sandstone, located 3 metres north of the Church of St. Giles. It dates from 1850 and commemorates William Shaw, who died on January 10th, 1850, at the age of 67. The headstone features a raised moulded edge and a 4-centred top. William Shaw was the principal of the Bowes Academy and is noted for being the inspiration for the character Wackford Squeers in Charles Dickens' work. The headstone is listed for its historical interest.
