Description
Numbers 1-4, Stanhope Butts Crescent, is a group of four houses with attached stables, built in the early 19th century. The houses are arranged in a crescent shape. They are constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins, with a Welsh slate roof for the houses and stone-flagged roofing on the stables.
The houses are two storeys high and have four bays each. They feature filleted boarded doors with overlights, with No. 3 having a patterned overlight and the central doors paired with Gothic-headed panels. No. 2 has a central blind quatrefoil on its door. All doors are set within alternate-block jambs and have flat lintels carved to resemble keyed segmental-arched voussoirs. Similar carved lintel detailing is found above the windows. The houses have 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and 12-pane sashes on the first floor, although No. 4 has later 19th-century-style sashes.
The stables have a sliding boarded vehicle door flanked by fixed lights, three loft openings (the central one with fixed glazing bars and the outer ones boarded), and a small square boarded opening above the right side. Flat stone lintels are present throughout. A fixed light is located below the loft opening in the lower left bay of the stables. The stables are included in the listing for their contribution to the group value of the crescent.
