Description
Peakfield Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century, is a farmhouse located on Peakfield Bank in Stanhope. It features coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and a stone-flagged roof, forming an L-plan structure with two storeys and three windows. The entrance is a partly-glazed door situated to the left of the third bay, framed by a cyma-moulded architrave, pulvinated frieze, and cornice. The first two bays contain three-light horizontal sliding sashes with moulded sills, and there are lugged flat stone lintels beneath label moulds. A smaller window to the right of the door has altered glazing and is part of the adjoining house. On the first floor, a 12-pane sash window is set under a chamfered stone lintel, using a re-used moulded sill and label mould. The low-pitched roof is topped with three ridge chimneys featuring thin bands.
At the rear, there is an outshut with two low storeys beneath a catslide roof, and a rear wing to the right, behind the third bay, has a semi-circular stone-coped oven projection in the gable, which includes rows of pigeon holes and shelves. The adjoining house to the right does not hold special interest. Inside, there is a through-passage with a fire backing onto it on the left, featuring a wood fire lintel with run-out chamfer and a small square recess in the outer wall to the right of the fire. The joists have stepped stopped chamfers. To the left of the fire, a moulded panelled screen encloses the space under the stairs, which includes an 8-panel door with moulded stiles and rails. Several 17th-century doors are present, featuring early snecks and turning loop handles, with one door displaying a star scutcheon.
