Description

Frosterley Bridge over the River Wear is a bridge built in 1813, constructed from sandstone ashlar. It features three recessed, segmental arches, with the inner arch flanked by cutwaters that slope inward to create pedestrian refuges in the parapet. The outer arches are flanked by pilasters. There is a band at road bed level, which is higher at the center of the river. The bridge has a chamfered parapet with canted refuges, and it ends in round piers that have bands below low-domed coping.
