Description
This cross, located approximately 17 metres north-west of the gate piers to Esh Hall, is likely from the 17th century. It is made of sandstone bubble and ashlar. The structure features a one-metre-high rectangular base constructed from coursed rubble with block coping, which supports the socket of a tapered cross-shaft. The arms of the cross are wider at the outer ends and have low-relief paterae at the ends of each horizontal arm. There is an eroded cartouche on the west face and an eroded date of 1687 on the north side. The purpose and exact date of the cross are uncertain, but it was previously noted to bear the inscription "I H S" and the date 1687. This cross is also designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
