Description
The gate piers at the entrance to the yard of Esh Hall Farm were resited around 1857 from a terrace to the south of Esh Hall, where they originally flanked the steps to the house. These gate piers date back to the 17th century and are constructed from sandstone ashlar, with some areas patched in concrete. They consist of two tall square piers with cornices, featuring alternate-block rustication and scroll-topped jamb pilasters. The north faces of the piers display cartouches with the arms of the Smythe family, although these are partly eroded. The flat coping on top supports four high open scrolls, with the scrolls on the east pier renewed in concrete, which hold acanthus-leaf-and-ball finials.
