Description
This is a farm building, now used as a calf house and storage loft, located northwest of Esh Hall. It dates from the 17th century and is constructed of thinly-rendered sandstone rubble, featuring a rendered boulder plinth on the left side and ashlar dressings. The building has a stone-flagged roof and consists of one storey with six bays.
The third bay has a chamfered flat-Tudor-arched surround to a recessed boarded Dutch door. The fifth bay contains a boarded door with a flat stone lintel and a three-pane overlight, while the sixth bay has a similar boarded door with a flat stone lintel. The first bay features a wide irregular wood lintel above a renewed window with metal glazing bars and a top-opening light. Other bays have similar windows and boarded openings of various sizes.
On the left side, there is a blocked loft door above a 20th-century adjacent building. The right side has stone steps leading to a boarded Dutch door and a rendered drinking trough positioned at the angle with the steps.
Inside, the building has substantial chamfered joists and a central longitudinal beam on the right side. The roof is supported by upper crucks with collars and struts, but lacks a ridge piece. The roofing flags, which are now fixed by pegs, have been reused from sheep-bone fixing.
