Description
These are early 19th-century farm buildings, now used as independent stables and a cottage, located off Staindrop Road in West Auckland. The buildings are constructed of rubble with ashlar and brick dressings, and have pantiled roofs. They follow a U-shaped plan, encompassing a west range which served as a stable and barn, a north range, and a south range.
The west range is two storeys tall and five bays wide. It has three Dutch doors with flat stone lintels on the front elevation, along with vent slits to the ground floor and first floor, the left first-floor slit being wider. There are also two boarded pitching doors. The right return features voussoirs to a wide segmental arch with a pitching door above. The north range, a single storey and six bays wide, includes a wide passage arch at the left with a visible beam, an elliptical arch at the rear, one Dutch door, and two renewed doors leading to the cottage, with renewed windows in the original openings. The south range also has a single storey and six bays, featuring hit and miss vents at each end, paired Dutch doors to the left and a single door to the right, all under thin timber lintels, and three brick segmental cart arches between, now partly boarded to create stable doors. The west range’s interior retains original features including wood stall partitions, a plain wooden staircase leading to a loft, and a king post roof.
