Description
The West Cornforth War Memorial, built in 1953 by an unknown architect, is a sandstone structure located on High Street in Cornforth. It features a wheel cross on a tapering plinth, adorned with Celtic interlace carving on the cross head and upper shaft. The memorial rests on two steps, with the upper step containing receptacles for flowers at each corner. It is set on a raised square platform.
The front of the memorial is engraved with the names of those who fell in the First World War, arranged in three columns, while two columns of names are inscribed on either side. A quotation on the top step reads: "IN HONOUR AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 'YE THAT LIVE ON IN ENGLISH PASTURES GREEN REMEMBER US AND THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN'." At the foot of the cross, a sloping tablet lists the names of the fallen from the Second World War, along with the dates 1939-1945.
This memorial, which commemorates the sacrifices of both World Wars, is a well-crafted example that reflects the community's strong ties to its history and meets the criteria for listing.
