Description
The Magistrates' Courts, formerly known as the Police Station, is located on Queen Street in Barnard Castle and dates from around 1840. This building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof that features stone gable copings and grey ridge tiles, along with stone chimneys. It stands three storeys tall and has a five-window range.
The entrance includes overlights above a renewed door situated one step up in the second bay, and a partly-flush-panelled door in the fourth bay, both framed by chamfered tooled raised stone surrounds with an entablature and cornice. The window located between the doors has been blocked with sandstone, except for a small pane of glass at the bottom right. The windows in the outer bays of the ground floor and all those above are sashes with glazing bars, each having raised stone surrounds. The first-floor windows are further embellished with aprons and cornices. There are bands at the first-floor level and second-floor sills. The roof's gable copings rest on small kneelers, and the end chimneys are corniced. Additionally, there is a wrought-iron footscraper built into the wall beside the second door. The interior has not been inspected.
