Description
The Cow House of Home Farm Burn Hall is a cow house and bull house designed by Sir John Soane for George Smith, first used at Marlesford, Suffolk in 1783. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with graduated Lakeland slate roofs. The building features a curved plan with end and central pavilions, consisting of one storey and lofts at the ends, and a very high central storey, all linked by one-storey, three-bay ranges of stalls. A circular bull house is located behind the left range.
The central pedimented pavilion has a high, wide arch with impost bands, while the linking stall ranges contain three arches. The ground floor of the end pavilions has arched openings, with square pitching holes above that feature voussoirs and flat stone sills. The end pavilions are topped with pyramidal roofs. The bull house, which is likely part of the same design, is made of brick and has flat stone lintels and sills, curving in plan to the door and two window openings, topped with a conical roof and a stone ball finial.
