Description
There are two barns that are part of the Durham Prison Officers' Club, originally part of Durham Priory farm, dating from the late medieval period. They are constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and have pantiled roofs, with the right barn featuring one row of Welsh slates at the eaves and stone gable copings.
The first barn on the left is a single storey with six bays and has a chamfered plinth. It includes modern openings for an inserted door and windows, and the wall tapers above the plinth. There is a corbelled-out eaves band. The second barn is also a single storey but has three bays, with paired inserted windows and a high chamfered plinth.
Inside the first barn, there are arch-braced, slightly-arched tie beams supported by jowled posts, along with queen-posts featuring struts and longitudinal bracing to the purlins. Some beams have been renewed in the fourth and fifth trusses, and certain struts have also been replaced. The upper part of the roof has been ceiled over. The interior of the second barn has similar trusses, some of which have been partly renewed.
