Description
Framwellgate Bridge is a Grade I listed bridge, originally built in the early 15th century as a replacement for an early 12th-century structure, and widened in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings. The south side features two wide elliptical arches that have three chamfers, a central cutwater, and iron cladding at the springing on the outer ribs. There are seven square ribs and an additional cutwater at the east end, along with one land arch visible. The bridge has bands at road bed level that dip towards stone drains. The renewed parapet has chamfered coping, and there are three 20th-century cast-iron lamps on the parapet on each side, marked with the founder's mark of Bromford Tube Co. The bridge is also a scheduled ancient monument.
