Description
Lloyd's Bank is a bank building dating from around 1900, located on the west side of Market Place in Durham and Framwellgate. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a dark red granite plinth and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof with red ridge tiles. The building is designed in the Baroque style and consists of three storeys with six bays.
The ground floor showcases channelled rustication with round-headed openings that have hollow-chamfered reveals. The channelling forms voussoirs above a panelled double door with a fanlight to the right and round-headed windows flanked by two slender wooden pilasters supporting inner arched glazing bars in the top light. One window has been altered to accommodate a cash dispenser. Long keys with fruit and ribbon carving support the cornice of the ground floor.
The upper floors are defined by giant attached Corinthian columns with garlands from the necking, creating a central recessed section of four bays. The outer bays feature central rusticated panels. All upper windows are sashes with glazing bars set within architraves. The windows in the central bays have high double keys, pulvinated friezes, and open pediments on the first floor, while the outer bays of the first floor also have high keys. The second-floor entablature is adorned with a modillioned cornice, and there is a blocking course at the top. A tall corniced ashlar chimney is located at the left end of the building.
