Description

This is a mid-18th century house, now a shop, located in Market Place, Durham and Framwellgate. The exterior is rendered with painted ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof with a brick chimney. It is four storeys high and one bay wide. Tuscan pilasters frame the shop door and a renewed window, which are set beneath an entablature with a dentilled cornice. A two-storey oriel window sits above the shop, featuring a hipped roof. The third floor includes a sash window within an architrave, with a projecting stone sill. Chamfered quoins are visible above the ground floor. Paired modillions and paired end brackets support the gutter cornice. A chimney is situated at the left-hand end of the building.

Inside, a closed-string staircase is found within a narrow square well. The staircase features a wide grip handrail with moulded sides and distinctive balusters in a vase-and-barley-sugar twist design, along with a deeply panelled string. A front room on the second floor showcases a stucco moulded cornice and a central ceiling circle decorated with oak leaves enclosing acanthus leaves. An eight-panelled door, set within a panelled reveal, leads to this room.
