Description
The Cowshill War Memorial is located in a small stone-walled enclosure on the north side of the B6295, overlooking Weardale and offering extensive views of the surrounding moorland. At approximately 410 meters above sea level, it is said to be the highest and possibly the most isolated war memorial in County Durham.
The memorial is designed in the form of an Iona cross. The front face of the cross head features an interlace pattern carved in low relief. Below this, the cross shaft is inscribed with the years 1914 and 1918, along with the phrase "LEST WE FORGET," interspersed with decorative flowers. The shaft rises from a rough-hewn plinth that sits on a low square step.
The front face of the plinth displays the main dedicatory inscription: "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR," followed by seven names. To the left of this inscription, there is a carved image of a sheathed sword encircled by a wreath, appearing to be hung over the plinth by the sword belt, also in low relief. In front of the low step, a small rectangular stone is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," followed by three names.
