Description

The summerhouse and attached garden wall, located 30 metres north-east of Hagg House, date from the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations. The summerhouse is constructed from limewashed rubble and brick, topped with stone-flagged roofs, while the garden wall is made of squared rubble and features a Gothick style.

The summerhouse is a two-storey, one-bay structure with tall, one-storey, one-bay wings set back on either side. It has a central boarded door situated in a partly-blocked pointed archway. Above the door is a round-arched niche with a projecting sill, a half-H apron, and an inserted four-pane light. The niche is flanked by stone panels that have incised crosses. The roof is a low-pitched pyramidal shape. The wings feature replaced casements with chamfered sills and lintels, adorned with triple keystones, and flat-coped battlements that hide low-pitched roofs. There is a stepped truncated external chimney on the right return.

The tall garden wall, which has a quadrant plan and flat coping, extends east for about 25 metres. The remaining sections of the garden wall to the south and east are not considered of special interest.

Locally, this summerhouse is known as Monks House and bears resemblance to another example found in the grounds of Woden Croft.
