Description
The building attached to the Kepier Hospital Gateway is a Grade II* listed structure located in Durham City. It dates back to the medieval period, with most alterations and additions made in the 19th century. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble, featuring quoins and ashlar dressings, along with various types of brick patching and insertions. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate and pantiles.
The structure is situated to the west of the hospital and extends northward from the gatehouse. The east elevation consists of a one-storey, two-bay section that is continuous with the ground floor of the gatehouse, alongside a two-storey, one-bay section that is set back due to the falling ground. There is also a slightly lower two-storey section with eight bays, making a total of eleven bays.
The first bay is made of old brick and features a 19th-century boarded door. The second bay, constructed from rubble with quoins at the right end, has a pointed-arched head at ground level, the purpose of which is unknown and is partly obscured by a mound. There is a blocked square opening above this bay. The third bay, which is set back, has blocked doors on both floors. The other bays, which are under a lower roof, contain 19th-century doors and windows, some of which are blocked or boarded up. Timber resembling the feet of upper crucks is visible on the first floor. The roof has four small skylights at the right end of the higher part, and the three rightmost bays are covered with pantiles. The interior was not inspected.
