Description

Two houses, dating to around 1840, are located on the north side of Gilesgate. They are built with English bond brickwork, featuring painted ashlar dressings. Number 70A has a Welsh slate roof, while Number 71 has a roof of graduated Lakeland slate. Each house is two storeys high and has two bays. Number 70A and Number 71 each have a four-panel door with a margined overlight. Number 70A has a plain wooden surround to the door, while Number 71 has a Tuscan doorcase with a hood. The windows are 16-pane sashes in the first bays, and 12-pane sashes above doors. They are set within wedge stone lintels and have projecting stone sills. Ogee-headed boot-scrapers are set within ashlar panels to the left of the doors. Chimneys are located at the left end of the properties. These details contribute to the group value of the buildings.
