Description

No. 167 and Belvedere is a house, originally built as two houses, now serving as student residences. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of Flemish bond brick with painted ashlar dressings, although the roof is not visible. The building has three storeys and features six windows arranged in groups of three.

There is a step up to a four-panelled door set in a stone doorcase with fluted pilasters and a pedimented entablature, located in the first bay. In the fourth bay, there is a curved step leading up to a five-panelled door with a fanlight that has glazing bars, framed by an open-pedimented Tuscan doorcase with a triglyph frieze. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, most of which have been renewed, and they have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The top floor features Venetian windows in the end bays, supported by brick pilasters and a projecting stone sill that breaks forward between the lights; the left top segmental light is blocked, and the right window is boarded up. The building also has floor bands and a dentilled eaves band, topped by a stone-coped parapet.

Inside, there is a staircase in the left end bay with a wide, ramped grip handrail and a balustrade that has been boarded over. Some two-panelled doors and cupboards with fielded-panelled doors and L hinges are present, although not all rooms have been inspected. The Venetian window features a Tuscan treatment.
