Description

The loggia of the former Heath family mansion, located east of the Great Gateway at Kepier Hospital, dates from the late 16th century and was built for John Heath. Constructed from sandstone ashlar and brick, it is designed in a classical style. The loggia is a single storey with four bays and features a three-arched loggia supported by columns with keyed arches and an entablature above. To the right, there is a square-headed doorway with a raised dripmould. A square column at the left corner has low pyramidal coping. Fragments of brickwork from the first floor are visible, showing six or seven courses. There is also a similar arch in the left return, while the first arch has been bricked up, and part of the cornice has fallen, indicating that the structure is in a decayed state at the time of the survey. The loggia is recognized as a scheduled ancient monument.
