Description

This is a commemorative column dating from around 1750. It was originally erected by Sir Hugh Smithson at Stanwick Park in North Yorkshire to commemorate the Peace of Aachen of 1748. In 1923, it was re-erected by Robert Edleston in the grounds of Edleston House in Gainford. The column is made of sandstone ashlar and features a tall Roman Doric design on a square-plan pedestal, which includes a moulded plinth and cornice. The column itself supports a square-plan plinth and a stepped base, which previously held a statue that has since been destroyed.
