Description
This group of three tombs is located approximately 6 metres south of the nave of St. Mary Magdalene in Medomsley. The tombs consist of one medieval grave cover and two chest tombs. The grave cover is medieval, while the north chest tomb dates from around 1726, and the south chest tomb is undated but likely from the early 18th century. All three tombs are made of sandstone.
The first chest tomb features a chamfered base and stone slab sides, topped with an overhanging flat coping. It is inscribed to Emanuel Walton of Bradley, who died in 1726, and his son Ambrose, who died in 1721. The second tomb is a plain grave cover with an incised cross and sword decoration, which was moss-covered at the time of the survey. The third chest tomb also has a chamfered base and stone slab sides, but it has round-edged coping and bears no inscription.
