Description

Foster and Mills slabs, located 4 metres south of the Church of St. Brandon in Brancepeth Park, consist of two memorial slabs raised on piers. The first slab, dated 1721, commemorates Jane Foster and is made of Frosterley marble resting on sandstone piers. It is wedge-shaped with deeply-chamfered sides and sits on two squat circular piers. The inscription on the sides and top face reads: "HERE LIETH YE BODY OF JANE THE WIFE OF HENRY FOSTER, ALDERMAN OF DURHAM, WHO DIED JUNE ... 1721. AGED 49 YEARS." The second slab, dated 1807, is dedicated to Henry Mills and is made of sandstone. It is a large horizontal slab with cyma-moulded edges, resting on two circular piers that are 1.0 metre high. The inscription on this slab is worn.
