Description
The belfry, located 100 metres north of the Church of St. Mary in Middleton in Teesdale, is believed to have been built around 1567 to house three bells. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with millstone grit quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with a stone-flagged roof and stone gable copings. The structure is two storeys high and consists of one bay. The gabled south elevation features a wide slit opening on the ground floor to the left, and a flat stone mullion with a two-light louvred opening at the peak of the gable. The gable has triangular-block edges and copings resting on curved kneelers. On the right side, there is a boarded door with irregular-block jambs and a flat stone lintel positioned to the left of centre, with a two-light flat-mullioned bell opening above it, and a slight projection to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
