Description
The structure consists of three pairs of piers and a statue located approximately 3 and 23 metres south of the Manor House. These were built in the late 17th century to early 18th century. The first pair of piers, situated in front of the garden door of the house, are made of sandstone rubble with ashlar finials. The second pair, located at the outer ends of the first terrace, are primarily brick, mostly rendered, and feature ashlar dressings and finials. The third pair, found at the centre of a second terrace about 23 metres from the house, are made of painted render with ashlar dressings and painted statues. All piers are square in shape.
The first pair consists of truncated piers with moulded plinths and urn finials on swept coping that have high, spiral-knobbed tops. The second pair stands about 1.5 metres high, showcasing prominent cornices, ball finials on stepped coping, and moulded bases. The third pair is likely slightly shortened, now standing around one metre high, with prominent cornices and statues on square coping. Each statue is approximately 0.7 metres high and appears to be mythical in nature; the left figure represents Cupid, while the right figure depicts a boy carrying a gourd—possibly a damaged lute—and leaning on a vine. Both statues show signs of damage. These piers and statues are included for their group value.
