Description

The Eastern Lime Kiln, located on the north bank of Bollihope Burn, was built around 1847 for the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company. The structure consists of two sections, made from ashlar sandstone and thin courses of squared sandstone, with brick-lined hoppers. The left section contains four kilns, while the right section has one kiln. The front wall is constructed of ashlar to a height that accommodates four segmental arches, with squared sandstone above. The lower parts of the arches are filled with thinner courses of stone. At the rear of the kilns, there are paired arched openings, although the right one is obscured or damaged; it features a segmental arch in a coursed squared sandstone wall and is significantly damaged as noted during the survey.
