Description
The stable and loft at Demesnes Mill, located on Gray Lane in Barnard Castle, likely dates from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a roof made of graduated stone slates with a stone ridge. The building has cast-iron tie plates and is two storeys high with one bay on the left and two bays on the right when viewed from the lane, while it rises to three storeys towards the river.
The north elevation facing the lane includes boarded Dutch doors at both ends and a boarded door in the second bay. The left door has plain reveals and a flat stone lintel, the central door has a plain stone surround, and the right door features irregular block jambs and a flat stone lintel. There are flat stone lintels above the windows flanking the central door, with a 4-pane lower section; the left window's upper part is blocked, while the right window has hit-and-miss vents. Above the central door, there is a boarded loading door on the first floor, along with a smaller loading door above the right door. The right side has two cast-iron tie plates. The gables have through stones and a slit vent in the peak of the right return gable.
The south elevation facing the river also has through stones, a flat stone lintel over a boarded door on the left, a 2-pane segmental-arched window on the right at the first floor, and two boarded openings on the second floor with 3-pane top lights. The interior has not been inspected.
