Description
This is a group of shops, offices, and accommodation built in the early 20th century as part of a wider commercial development. It consists of an 8-bay, 4-storey range constructed of brick and ashlar. Numbers 20, 22, and 24 have entrances designed to resemble domestic properties, while the remaining units have shopfronts. The overall design is symmetrical and consistent, with each unit having the same appearance, aside from the shopfront variation. The windows are plate glass sashes, some of which have been replaced, and are set within moulded surrounds. Each unit features a 3-window range. The first floor windows are particularly elaborate, with heavy Gibbs surrounds, keystones, and a central window featuring an elaborate entablature, a deep keystone, and a broken pediment. The second floor has moulded aprons below the two outer windows. The egg and dart cornice continues from the neighbouring range at numbers 10-18 Clarence Place, and the dividing pilasters are similar, although the Ionic capitals are slightly simpler. The pilasters on the top storey are ornamented with decorative carved panels. The building has a plain cornice and a high parapet that conceals the roof. At ground floor level, the three right-hand units are set below a deep band and include round-arched doorways with Gibbs surrounds, along with two windows featuring prominent keystones. Most of the shopfronts have been remodelled, but at the left end, traces of the original design remain, including 6-panelled doors with 6-pane overlights. This building is considered an integral part of the early 20th century commercial development and is valued for its contribution to the group, alongside numbers 10-18 Clarence Place and the Technical Institute. It also shares group value with the War Memorial.
