Description
The Bothy at Machen House is a range of servants' accommodation built in the Georgian Gothic style. It features unpainted roughcast walls and close-eaved slate roofs. The main structure is single-storey and includes one rendered ridge stack for each range, topped with triangular cresting. To the right, there is a two-storey entrance tower, flanked by two ranges of differing lengths: a 7-bay range on the left and a 3-bay range on the right.
The right end has a short square-plan return section with a hipped roof to the northwest and a gabled roof with a short chimney to the south. The windows and doors are pointed; the windows are casement pairs with fixed Y-tracery heads and stone sills, while the doors are flush-panelled. The longer range to the left features one window, two doors, and another window to the left of the ridge chimney, along with three windows to the right. The two-storey tower has a similar window above a similar door, with the upper part designed for glazing and featuring Y-tracery. It also has a string course beneath an embattled parapet and a pyramid roof. The 3-bay range to the right has a window on each side of the door, which also features Y-tracery, with a chimney situated between the door and the right window.
At the southwest return, there is a similar window on the north and west sides. The rear facing the churchyard is constructed of rubble stone with a coped parapet and a string course below. A later addition at an angle to the north end, facing southwest and backing onto the garden wall, has a lower roof but similar eaves, with a rubble stone front that includes broad arched cart entries at the center and right, and a pointed doorway on the left, all featuring thin yellow brick heads.
Inside, the tower entrance hall contains a spiral cast-iron staircase with pierced treads and turned balusters. To the left, there is a large servants' hall with three windows, a plastered curved vault, and a panelled dado.
