Description
Pencoed Castle is a large three-story Tudor manor house built from dressed stone and re-faced in ashlar on the front (west) elevation, featuring a battlemented parapet. The great hall runs along a north-south axis and includes a central three-story porch on the front elevation. This porch is square in plan, extends to full height, and has a segmental pointed outer door opening with a segmental headed recess above. To the right of the porch is a two-story section with two window bays, featuring five-light transomed hall windows on the ground floor and two five-light windows above. On the left side of the porch is a three-story section with a two-window range that includes two and three-light windows. Adjacent to this is a further range, which includes the remains of a three-story projecting wall with three openings that separates the two ranges. The three-story north wing contains the kitchens on the ground floor, while the south wing provides additional accommodation. The castle has undergone significant restoration, including refacing, reroofing, and refenestration with Tudor style chamfered mullion windows. The side and rear walls remain mostly unrestored, although some replacement windows are visible. Parts of the masonry appear to be robust, suggesting that earlier fabric has been retained. The rear elevation features two large, three-story wings that project at the north and south ends. The building was unavailable for inspection at the time of the survey in September 1995.
