Description
The Ashlar Doric portico at The Roman Legionary Museum is built from Bath limestone and features a Doric tetrastyle design. It follows the Greek Doric order, complete with a triglyph frieze and a pediment. The columns have fluting that does not extend to the ground and rest on a plinth consisting of two stone steps. There is a blind wall that includes large panelled entrance doors set within a pylon architrave. These doors were replaced during the museum's rebuilding in 1987. It is interesting to note that a museum dedicated to Roman antiquities features a Greek portico, which may have been reused from the Old Market House. The listed part of the building does not have an interior.
