Description

Nos. 8 and 9 Tre-Elidyr are paired houses built from local red sandstone random rubble, featuring dressed quoins and window surrounds, and topped with stone slate roofs. Designed in a 17th century style with Arts-and-Crafts influences, the houses are canted, creating a butterfly plan. They are single storey with an attic. The main range is shared between the two houses, with service wings angled away, presenting a convex side to the road and a concave side to the garden and green.

The front door is located in the main range, while the service entrance is found in the shorter canted wings. The main range includes a plank door and a large gabled half dormer with a 3-light casement above. The canted wing features a tall stone external stack, flanked by 2-light casements and a small window above. Each wing has single storey weatherboarded extensions that contain the service entrance, WC, and coal store. The steeply pitched roof has a shared ridge stack where the houses meet.

On the concave garden side, there is a 3-light window below and a dormer above, along with a plank door set beneath an unusual stone gabled porch. The canted wing has two 2-light windows below and a small 2-light dormer above.

Inside, the property is very carefully finished and largely unaltered. All joinery was crafted from estate timber, featuring plank doors with hand wrought hinges and latches, though some doors have been removed and are in storage. The floorboards, stairs, and layout remain complete and unchanged. The roof structure is of 17th century type, with upper cruck/principal trusses, collars, and ties.
