Description
The dovecote at Hygga House is a Grade II* listed structure built from limewashed stone rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings and topped with a stone slate roof. It has a circular plan and features a doorway with a plain chamfered surround and a 4-centred arch head, made from a single lintel stone, leading to a modern oak plank door. There are two 2-light windows with ovolo mullions, which is quite unusual for a dovecote. The upper wall has continuous bands of nesting boxes arranged in six tiers, complete with stone alighting ledges. The dovecote is topped with a conical roof that has a lantern cap, allowing doves access to the interior.
Inside, the dovecote is limewashed and contains eleven tiers of nesting boxes, which are continuous except where interrupted by the windows and the door. The oak roof was reconstructed in the 1980s.
