Description
Penarth Mill is a three-storey building constructed from roughly coursed and squared red sandstone conglomerate rubble, topped with a corrugated sheet metal roof. At the front, there is a projecting two-storey store and granary. The mill is built into the hillside, allowing direct access to the bin floor via a short flight of stairs on the gable end, and it backs onto the milldam.
The main elevation features three bays, with a central plank door above which is a date plaque, and a blocked window to the left. The right side of the front is dominated by the projecting wing, likely added shortly after the main structure. The upper floor, known as the stone floor, has three 2-light casement windows, all with elliptical heads. The roof is steeply pitched. The projecting wing includes doors on each floor, with an additional door to the ground floor, or sack floor, in the gable end. The left gable has a doorway leading directly into the bin floor for grain delivery.
The right gable end previously housed a three-quarter breast-shot wheel, which is now missing, but there is a blocked hole for the drive-shaft and an iron water delivery pipe that extends from the dam. Above this, there is a damaged window on the stone floor and a 2-light casement window on the bin floor in the gable. The rear wall of the projecting wing is plain, and the rear elevation facing the millpond is also featureless.
While not inspected during the resurvey, it is reported that the mill retains its complete machinery. The typical layout of bin floor, stone floor, and sack floor is expected.
