Description

Nos. 1-4 Cottage Homes is a row of four single-storey almshouse-style cottages built in the early 20th century, showcasing a striking Arts-and-Crafts Tudor style. The cottages are constructed from snecked rubble with some close-studded half-timbering, featuring freestone dressings and a graduated slate roof. The design is symmetrical, with a central through-passage that separates paired cottages, each having short back extensions. The low façade is highlighted by a tall central porch with a feature gable, and end bays that have semi-circular gables, all slightly projecting and breaking through the eaves.

The central porch is canted and features a moulded segmental arch at eaves level, a large carved plaque above displaying the arms of Lord Llangattock, and a coped parapet raised over the centre as a gable with ball finials. Each end bay includes a three-light stone mullioned window and a wide semi-circular gable with ball finials. The intermediate sections have doorways and windows arranged in reflected symmetry, with doorways featuring Tudor-arched stone architraves and board doors, while all windows consist of three wooden mullioned lights set in studwork. Beneath each outer pair of windows, there is an original bench with a railed and arcaded back. The roof is adorned with two pairs of ridge chimneys, and each gable has an extruded chimney stack. The through-passage is lined with close-studding and leads to the rear, which features a pair of large gables and windows set in studwork similar to the front.
