Description
The barn and attached outbuildings at Great House are constructed from whitewashed rubble stone and feature varied roofs. The barn has a corrugated iron roof that is slightly raised as a catslide over double doors and extends down over added lean-tos on each side. The lean-tos have doors in their outer end walls. The right end wall of the barn is not whitewashed and has three loops. The rear wall has been rebuilt in blockwork to the left of the full-height doors, while the original whitewashed rubble remains to the right, which also features two loops. Attached to the left end of the barn is a lofted outbuilding with higher eaves and an asbestos sheet roof. There are outside steps to the right leading up to a large plank door, with the foot of the steps at mid-height of the center door. A small four-pane window is located to the left, with timber lintels above. The loft window and a small lower window are found in the unpainted end wall.
The rear farm court has the barn on the south side and ranges along the west and north sides. These are single-storey structures with slate roofs. The west side includes a door, a loop, large double doors, a window, and additional double doors. The lower L-plan range beyond was possibly originally open-fronted but is now mostly infilled.
Inside, the barn features a four-bay roof supported by three tie-beam-and-collar pegged trusses and double purlins. There is one loop on each side in the front wall, but these are obscured by the lean-tos from the outside. The barn has opposed rear doors, with the wall to the right rebuilt in blockwork and the wall to the left containing two loops. The right end wall has three loops, while the left end wall has none. The lofted range to the west contains two large oak beams and oak joists.
