Description

This building is an outbuilding, possibly a former gatehouse and court-room, located north of Trostrey Court. It is constructed from rubble stone and has a corrugated iron roof. The structure is two storeys high, with the front facing northwest and a slightly lower gabled section on the left end, which provided access to a first-floor loft. The first floor features two fine oak two-light mullion windows, which have recessed chamfer mouldings and diagonally-set glazing bars. The ground floor doorway beneath the left window has been altered, and there are remains of a lean-to cart-shed on the right.

The southeast end has a slightly lower roof over a balcony entrance to the loft, with two superimposed openings leading to the under-stair area at the front. A broad timber lintel is located below, with an upper opening directly above it featuring a slab lintel. There are stone external stairs on the outside end wall, and a timber lintel above the door, with further timber stairs leading inside to a door to the upper loft, which was inaccessible in 1999. This section was lit by a blocked window, and there is a datestone from 1667 said to be in the gable, although it was not seen.

The northwest end wall is heavily covered in ivy and appears windowless, with a ground floor door on the left. This door features a heavily moulded oak frame with a double ovolo design, although one jamb and the door itself are missing. A chamfered lintel is positioned above the door.

The rear southwest wall shows remains of various openings, including windows that have been altered to serve as ventilation slits. The upper floor retains one original two-light mullion window and one later two-light window to the left, which has a simpler design. The upper floor was no longer accessible in 1999. The ground floor contains about ten close-set beams, some of which have been inserted between heavier unchamfered beams. These beams have double mortices for deep joists, indicating the presence of plaster ceilings. The upper floor has a six-bay layout with five lapped-collar roof trusses, which were also not accessible. The ground floor at the rear shows signs of previous fenestration, possibly four windows, most of which are blocked, and the north end features a large opening.
