Description
This is a mid-to-late 19th century pair of three-storey buildings on Cross Street. Both properties have rendered frontages with two windows each. The building at number 52 features scribed ashlar detailing. They have natural slate roofs with wide eaves, a central cement-rendered chimney stack, and a red brick stack to the gable end of number 52. The windows are horned sash windows of varying sizes and designs. Number 52 has a pair of 16-pane windows on the first floor, while the second floor has a 4 over 4-pane sash window to the right and a split window to the left, likely to provide light for a bathroom and separate toilet. Number 53 features distinctive margin glazing with coloured glass on the first floor and 4-pane sashes on the second floor. The left-hand windows of number 53, closest to the bank, are smaller on both floors. Both buildings have modern shop fronts, but they are traditionally designed and in keeping with the street scene. A square-headed doorway with a four-panel door provides access to the upper floor of number 52. A further four-panel door is located to the left of the shopfront of number 53.
The rear elevation is visible from Monk Street but is not significantly noteworthy. Number 52 has a gabled, shallow cross range. Number 53 is a deeper building incorporating a longer stone cross range which extends the length of the property. This element steps down slightly to the east, ending in a red brick gable end with yellow brick dressings.
The buildings contribute to the group value of the nearby Lloyds Bank.
