Description
The HSBC building is a Grade II listed structure built of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring Portland stone dressings and a plain tiled roof. It has a double depth plan and is designed in the Flemish style of the 17th century. The building is one storey with an attic and consists of three bays. The ground floor includes a plinth that suggests the presence of a basement. It features arched treatments with pilasters between the openings. There are two altered windows on the left, which are set on a cill band, and a doorway on the right that has an architrave surround and a shell tympanum with keyed heads. A cornice runs along the top, supporting a parapet that includes a central window in a pedimented aedicule, which is supported by large scrolls and contains a casement window. The building has a mansard roof with a tall brick stack on the right side. The rear elevation has not been seen. The ground floor has been altered with late 20th-century planning and details, and the upper floor was not visible during the last survey in July 2004.
