Description
Maindiff Farmhouse is a two-storey building with attics, constructed in the 19th century. It features squared and roughly coursed rock-faced red and grey sandstone rubble, accented with yellow brick dressings and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The main section faces the farmyard, with two equal wings extending behind it towards the garden.
On the yard front, there are three windows on the upper floor and one on the ground floor, all of which are sash windows. The upper windows are 2 over 2 plate glass, except for the central window, which is 1 over 1. The windows are framed with quoined brick surrounds and decorative bands. The two right-hand bays on the ground floor are covered by a tented verandah or pentice supported by three decorative iron columns, which shelters the kitchen door. The outer windows on the upper floor are set into bargeboarded gables topped with spike finials. The steeply pitched roof includes two roof-lights and has decorative stone and brick stacks at both ends of the ridge.
The road front features two bays, with small gables on the left and a larger one on the right, all adorned with bargeboards. The upper floor windows are 2 over 2 sashes, with arched heads. A recessed stone panel in the larger gable reads: "THIS HOUSE WAS REBUILT BY CRAWSHAY BAILEY ESQ. JANUARY 1876."
On the garden front, there are two equal gabled projections flanking a narrow recessed entrance, with a window above. Each wing has a canted bay on the ground floor with a lead roof and 2 over 2 sashes flanked by 1 over 1 sashes. The first floor features paired arched windows, 2 over 2, with each gable having a 1 over 1 sash window with a shouldered arch and keystone. The gables are also decorated with bargeboards and spike finials. There are two stacks behind the ridge, making a total of four stacks.
The rear elevation was not seen, and the interior details were not available at the time of the resurvey in June 1997.
