Description

Cwm Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse constructed from colour-washed rubble stone with rendered gables and a slate roof featuring brick end stacks. The building is two storeys high with a symmetrical front. The first floor has three 19th century 12-pane horned sash windows with shallow stone sills. The central entrance doorway on the ground floor is topped by a gabled open porch and features an 18th century 6-panel door, of which the top four panels are glazed. On either side of the entrance are similar 12-pane sash windows. The rear service wing retains remnants of a former 4-light diamond mullion window in the upper gable, along with a 20th century window in the former dairy on the ground floor. The back roof is covered with 20th century composition slate tiles and has four 20th century roof lights.

Inside, the farmhouse is well-preserved and features an exceptionally unusual dated staircase. Upon entering, there is a stone-flagged lobby with the staircase located on the left side. The riser of the third step is inscribed with the initials W W and a heart motif, while the riser of the second step bears the date 1745. The quarter-turn staircase has landings and is equipped with a moulded handrail and square newel posts with roll moulding at the angles. The living room, located to the left of the entry, includes a 6-panel door and a 19th century register grate. To the right of the entry, there is a boarded partition with a 20th century boarded door leading to the kitchen. The kitchen features chamfered ceiling beams with scroll stops and a chamfered wooden fireplace lintel, which may be re-used. Ghost marks on the face of the lintel and on the upper wall indicate the position of a former spit rack, with one bracket surviving outside its original location. The back wall of the hearth contains a bread oven with a cambered brick arch. Fireplace cupboards are set into the side walls; the left cupboard has a fielded panel with H-hinges, while the right upper cupboard is panelled and the lower cupboard is boarded with strap hinges. The rear service wing, which formerly housed the dairy, opens off the kitchen. The upstairs bedrooms feature plank and batten doors with strap hinges, and an 18th century stone fireplace surround with a shouldered architrave. The habitable attic consists of five bays with collar trusses.
