Description
The monument to Eleanor Isabella Franklin is located at the east end of the Church of St. Andrew. It is made of red sandstone ashlar and features iron railings. Designed in the form of a medieval altar, the monument consists of a rectangular Gothic tomb with a six by two cusped arch arcade that supports a moulded slab top, which carries a recumbent cross. This tomb is positioned on a stone base surrounded by a small railed enclosure. The arcade includes several inscriptions, one of which states: 'Eleanor Isabella... only child (of) Sir John Franklin, first discoverer of the North West Passage... from a deadly malady from which she had rescued a suffering child, died... 1860.'
