Description
Pit Cottages is a pair of cottages built in a simple picturesque style. They feature random rubble construction with an informal mix of colors, rusticated quoins, and Welsh slate roofs. The cottages have a rebuilt axial brick chimney stack and decorated barge-boards on the front and side gables.
The design is symmetrical, with advanced gables at the center and porches located at the angles of the gables and the main range on either side. Both porches have hipped roofs covered in stone tiles and are timber boarded, with vertical boarding on the left (No. 1) and horizontal boarding on the right (No. 2). Above each porch, there are small windows.
The central gables feature canted bay windows with stone tiled roofs on the ground floor, and above them are 2-light casement windows with steep arched heads that include voussoirs. All windows have transoms and margin-lights, which create a distinctive decorative effect. Similar windows with voussoirs can be found in the arched heads of the gable ends. The rear of the cottages has simpler detailing and includes later additions.
