Description

Ty-Isaf Farmhouse is a T-plan gentry house dating from the 18th century. It features roughcast walling and stone-tiled roofs, with end gables that have bargeboards and red brick stacks. The entrance front is set back and consists of two storeys plus an attic, with two windows and a gabled dormer that has a six-paned window. All windows are wood-framed with projecting sills, and there is a plain door on the right under a tiled lean-to hood. The original entrance to the left of the current opening has been blocked. A stone-walled forecourt is present. The taller garden elevation has two storeys and three windows, with the ground floor obscured by a later lean-to. The rear (east side) features a low, sweeping dog-leg slate roof with a red brick stack at the end.

Inside, the building shows evidence of two main construction phases. The older part is the lower entrance block, which retains sub-medieval detailing and an external battered south wall, now adjacent to the later main staircase aligned with the current entrance. The painted timber handrail has turned balusters in an 18th-century style, though they are widely spaced. The original ground-floor room on the left has chamfered beams with broach stops and stop-chamfers on the chimney bressumer. The timber roof retains massive A-frame trusses with trenched purlins, and the collar beams are positioned below the attic floor level, which also includes an ancient timber door that once secured an external opening. This arrangement indicates that Ty-Isaf was used for a maltster's business, featuring a solid drying floor, possibly concrete, in the attic. The southern range has later trusses with dovetailed collar beams and trenched purlins, and a modern panelled room has been created on the ground floor of this range.
