Description
The railings and gates at the St Mary Street War Memorial are a notable feature, classified as Grade II. They consist of double gates and piers, which are flanked by curved and ramped panels along with shorter piers. A continuous line of railings runs along each side, extending across the St Mary Street frontage of the garden. The structure is made of wrought and cast iron, with the piers marked ‘BAKER’S NEWPORT’. The gates feature scroll decoration along the outer margins and the top rail, along with dog bars. The cast iron gatepiers have a pediment, with plain panels on the shaft and a capital adorned with rosettes. The railings are composed of individual panels with intermediate uprights; each panel consists of square section rails with plain points, a central rail that includes scroll work and a ball finial, and end rails topped with abstract horn finials.
