Description

Ebenezer Welsh Independent Chapel and Ysgoldy Ebenezer are notable structures located in Tonypandy. The chapel, built in 1868, features coursed rockfaced sandstone with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof adorned with ridge tiles, ventilators, and gables topped with metal finials. Its gable end facade stands two storeys high and is organized into three levels. The central section has a pedimented gable flanked by two gabled cross bays, with a slightly recessed three-bay entrance loggia. The central bay displays a range of three round-headed windows, each with a keystone and small paned coloured glass, flanked by two smaller lights. Above this, a pediment contains a small gable light and two roundels surrounding an inscription panel that reads 'Ebenezer Independent Chapel Tonypandy AD 1868'. Each side bay has pairs of similar round-headed windows with ashlar surrounds, incorporating keystones and imposts topped with a pediment. The tiled entrance loggia features round-headed arches with keystones and imposts, leading to two doorways with six-panelled doors. The side elevation consists of five bays with round-headed windows fitted with 6/6 pane horned sashes and coloured glass overlights.

Ysgoldy Ebenezer, the former Sunday school wing attached to the rear left of the chapel, has a two-bay main frontage with round-headed multipane sashes and three segmental-headed 4/4 pane margin glazed sashes on the rendered side, along with additional sashes on the cross wing. It includes a small tiled forecourt with stone steps, a wall, entrance piers, metal gates, and railings. The former Sunday school is now used as a chapel and features a planked dado and an elaborate adjustable timber and glazed partition in the meeting room.
