Description

The Ebenezer Welsh Independent Chapel, dating to 1868, is constructed of coursed rockfaced sandstone with ashlar dressings, coursed rubble to the sides, and a rendered rear elevation. It has a Welsh slate roof with ridge tiles, ventilators, and metal finials on the gables. The prominent gable end facade features a central, pedimented section with two gabled cross bays linked by a recessed three-bay entrance loggia. The central bay has a three-window range of round-headed windows with keystones and small-paned coloured glass; the central window is flanked by two smaller lights, and the pediment top contains a small gable light with roundels flanking an inscription panel reading "Ebenezer Independent Chapel Tonypandy AD 1868". The side bays each have pairs of similar round-headed windows with ashlar surrounds incorporating keystones and imposts, topped by a pediment. The tiled entrance loggia has round-headed arches with keystones and imposts, a cornice, and opposing doorways with six-panelled doors. The side elevation has five bays of round-headed windows with 6/6 pane horned sashes and coloured glass overlights.

Attached to the rear left, facing Ebenezer Road, is the former Sunday school wing, Ysgoldy Ebenezer. It possesses a two-bay main frontage with round-headed multipane sashes, three segmental headed 4/4 pane margin glazed sashes to the rendered side, and further sashes to a cross wing. A small tiled forecourt features stone steps, a wall, entrance piers, metal gates, and railings.

The main chapel building is currently disused and in deteriorating condition. The interior is richly furnished, featuring a four-sided, raked gallery supported by ten iron bracketed, fluted piers with painted capitals. The gallery’s panelled fronts are extraordinarily decorative, crafted from carved and polished contrasting woods with fretwork panels and ebony colonnettes, each topped with a planked soffit. The windows have hood moulds and label stops, with ventilators and gas brackets on the scored walls. A platform incorporates two flights of stairs leading to a carved and molded pulpit, which is decoratively panelled to the rear of a triple seat and has a curved, decoratively panelled front and fretwork to the set fawr. All fittings are richly carved, and the arrangement remains intact. An organ by Peter Conacher of Springwood Huddersfield, dating to c1892, is located above, flanked by six painted pilasters on the gallery walls. The ceiling is highly decorative, with two large roses incorporating ventilators and thirteen smaller versions within a panelled framework of part plaster and part boarded elements. A separately decorated, panelled, rosed ceiling sits above the organ. Coloured glass windows illustrate the rear elevation. Due to the open loggia entrance, rather than a typical enclosed vestibule, the windows are unusually large, resulting in a brighter interior than is commonly found in the region.
