Description

The Quarry House is a two-storey building constructed from lias limestone sourced from an old quarry on the site. It features coursed squared quarry-faced stone with Bath stone dressings and a roof made of Westmorland slate. The house has stone mullioned windows with dripstones, and the casements contain small hexagonal and diamond panes.

The entrance front faces southeast and consists of three bays, with the end bays gabled and the central bay featuring overhanging eaves. A dripstone runs across the entire ground floor, arching over the doorways and windows. The central bay has a three-light window on the first floor and a three-centred arched doorway on the ground floor, which is adorned with a moulded architrave and carved spandrels. Above the doorway is the original name of the house, 'The Quarry', carved into the stone. To the right of the door is a three-light mullioned window.

The right-hand gabled bay includes a three-light mullioned window with a dripstone on the first floor and a four-light mullioned window on the ground floor. The left-hand gabled bay features a five-light window with a dripstone on the first floor and a five-light mullioned window on the ground floor. In the northeast return, there is a five-light bay window on the ground floor, with a gabled bay to the right that has a four-light window below and a three-light window above. The southwest return has a roof that sweeps down over a doorway, leading to a gabled bay with a three-light window below and a five-light window above. The building has steeply pitched roofs with two large stone stacks, and there is a modern single-storey extension at the right rear. The rear elevation was not visible during the resurvey in February 2002.

Inside, the main ground floor rooms have been combined with the stairhall to create one bar space, although the original divisions are still identifiable. Some original panelling and joinery, including the staircase, remain, alongside later additions. The western room has not been altered, while the rear rooms and upper floor were not inspected during the resurvey.
