Description
The lychgate at the entrance to Church Lane serves as a notable feature for St Mellons Church. It is timber-framed with a slate gabled roof positioned sideways to the road, topped with a red tile ridge and an ornate metal cruciform finial. The structure is supported at each end by tall wooden posts that have shaped braces, resting on a stone plinth. Inside, the roof is boarded, and the thick rafters are scalloped at their ends.
The lychgate features two wood-framed gates, each consisting of three panels wide and two panels deep. The upper row has open cusped wooden panelling, while the lower part is made of metalwork, complete with long metal hinges. The lock rails of the gates have an inscription on the east side that reads: "Arglwydd par i mi wybod, fi niwedd, a pheth yw mesur/fy nyddiau, fel y gwypwyf o ba oedran y byddaf fi;" while the west side provides the translation: "Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure/of my days, what it is, that I may know how frail I am" (Psalm 39, v 4). There are also similar smaller pedestrian gates on either side.
